Construction has finally begun on the Sellwood Bridge replacement project. On a recent rare sunny weekend morning I went to check it out with the Nacho man. The tugboats are working hard against the current as they begin work constructing the piers for the temporary detour bridge. It's the perfect spot to bring little kids crazy to see big machines doing things. (There were a lot of retired guys checking it out too!)
At long last, progress. We'll be able to walk and ride bikes more safely over the new bridge sometime in 2015, and heavy trucks and buses will be allowed again. Even late in the game grumpy Clackamas county voters refusing to contribute funds to a bridge that many of them use daily couldn't derail the project from starting.
This project feels long overdue given the terrible safety rating of the current bridge. It's also more than time to get some kind of resolution for the condo owners that are affected by the construction. The limbo-land feel of the project over the last few years really made it tough for condo owners in buildings close by the bridge to sell their homes. My feeling is that now that progress is being made, potential construction noise and hassles will be easier to explain to potential buyers of the homes in the bridge area.
Anyway, I'm excited to see progress happening in our little corner of SE Portland. Let me know if you want to talk Sellwood/Moreland real estate, or the bridge project.
